Embarking on some video work

Yeah, it’s been a while since I’ve written anything. Unlike most photographers, the area I work in has been absolute mayhem which has impacted my ability to do much writing. I used to write a couple of articles a week for Shotkit.com, at the moment I’m writing one review every 3-4 weeks with a backlog of about 5 items to get through.

That said, as part of my non-photography day job, I’ve been asked to put together a couple of 3 minute videos as part of the process as building our brand awareness as thought leaders. Video is an area I’m not comfortable with so this will be a learning curve.

So I embarked on the process of acquiring the appropriate pieces of gear to get me going with some still on order. Those included

  • Godox VL150 – My main light. The plan is to run this through a 90cm Rimelite Octa.
  • Godox LC500R – This is the RGB version of the LC500 I already have which I will use to add some ambient colour
  • Rode VideoMicro Ultracompact Shotgun Mic (shown in the picture)

I’ve consider adding an Elgato CamLink so I can use the setup for concalls but they are out of stock at the moment.

There have been some rookie mistakes already. I couldn’t understand why the mic quality was the same with and without the Rode Mic. I later realised I had it plugged into the headphone jack and the microphone jack was hidden behind another door. As I said, rookie mistake.

As I go through the process, I’ll document my findings. Should be an interesting process to go through.
